In the summer and fall of 1895, a bizarre large number of what were then referred to as “cyclones” caused devastation upon Iowa.
That fall, Iowa State played at Northwestern and they made history as well as the headlines.
The following day Chicago Tribune read “Iowa Cyclone Devastates Evanstontown” and since that famous moment the athletic teams have been known as the “Cyclones.”
A bird similar to a cardinal was introduced at the 1954 Iowa State Homecoming pep rally. A contest was held to determine the cardinal’s name. |
The entry “Cy” won which is the diminutive for Cyclones. The Cardinal figure represents the school colors as well as the original Iowa State nickname.
