Since their first season of football in 1915, the Mustangs have won 10 conference championships, most recently in 2005. Cal Poly’s main rival is UC Davis, with whom they play what is called the annual “Battle for the Golden Horseshoe”.
During the 2008 season, Cal Poly ended in 1st place of the regular season with a great record of 8-3 but, in spite of their success during the season, the Mustangs lost their last two games against Wisconsin and Weber State in the playoffs.
