Based in Cedar City, Utah, the Southern Utah Thunderbirds have been members of the Great West Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA since 2004. The Thunderbirds play their home games at Eccles Coliseum, which was opened in 1967.
In the team’s history, the Thunderbirds have only won one championship in 1993. During the last five years the Thunderbirds have struggle in the GWT, with multiple losing seasons while in hands of coach Wes Mieir, who was replace by Ed Lamb for 2009.
For the 2008 season, a 4-7 record left the Southern Utah team in last place of the GWC, finishing the conference play with a 1-3 record. Now with inclusion of new coach Ed Lamb, the team hopes to restructure the program and improve its record.
