The Army Black Knights represent the United States Military Academy and play football since 1890.
Army is one of the four teams in the Division I-A which are independents and haven't join any conference. The only time Army was committed to a conference was between the years 1998 and 2004 with the USA Conference.
The Academy's Athletics are supported by two mascots, the mule, which use has been a tradition since 1899, honors the Army's past reliance on the animal for transporting guns and supplies. Real mules only make appearances at home games and the Navy game, while Blackjack, a costume mule, goes to all games. |
Their other mascot is the Black Knight, which appears at ball games in full battle dress as a attempt to intimidate the opponents with its menacing appearance.
The Army-Navy Game, wich is generally played every year on the first Saturday of December, is one of the most traditional and enduring rilvalries in college football. In the most recent Army-Navy game, on December 2, 2006, Army faced its fifth consecutive loss and in the overall, Army has won 49 of the 107 games played since 1890.
