The Lions were very successful during the first half of the 20th century. Recognized players from that era include All-American Sid Luckman, a quarterback who would go on to lead the Chicago Bears to four NFL championships on the 1940's. The Lions have won a total of one championship in their history, during the season of 1961.

Last season, the Columbia Lions ended in 6th place of the Ivy League with an overall record of 2-8, losing the last game of the season against Brown with a score of 10-41.
