Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Quakers have been members of the Ivy League Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA since 1956. At Philadelphia, the Quakers play at the Franklin Field, which was established in 1895.

The University of Penn has had a number of coaches in its history; however, under current coach Al Bagnoli, the Quakers program has launched to the top of the Ivy League. Bagnoli has the second-most wins of any other active coach in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, and has the most wins of any active coach in the Ivy League. He is also the only Ivy coach to capture six titles.

During their history, the Quakers have won 11 conference championships; the last one was won in 2003. In the 2008 season, the Quakers ended in third place of the conference with an overall record of 6-4, winning the last game against Cornell 23-6.
