The MAAC Football League was established in January of 1993 and began to play in September of the same year. The league which is part of the NCAA Division I-AA classification consists of two schools: Marist and Iona; besides two associate members La Salle and Duquesne.

Various former members of the MAAC Football League; Canisius, Fairfield, Saint John's and are no longer part of this conference. Saint Peter's as of June 2007 while Georgetown moved to the Patriot League.

After the 2007 season; Duquesne will formally leave the MAAC Football League to join the Northeast Conference; situation which leaves the future of the MAAC FL in serious doubt with only three remaining teams.
