Based in Norfolk, Virginia, the Norfolk State Spartans are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA. The Spartans joined the MEAC in 1997 after competing in the Eastern Intercollegiate Conference from 1953-1960 and then in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1962 to 1996.
From the Spartans first football year in 1950, the team has only won two conference championships and averages an all-time record of 400–443–24. The Spartans play their home games at William "Dick" Price Stadium.
For the 2008 season, an overall 5-7 record left the Spartans team in seventh place of the MEAC, with the team winning the last game of the season against Winston-Salem 17-14.
