Based in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, the Central Michingan University Chippewas are members of the Mid-American Conference in the NCAA Division I. The Chippewas won their first and only NCAA Division II National Championship in 1974, defeating Delaware. Central Michigan has been playing in Division I ever since. The Chippewas play their home games at the Kelly/Shorts Stadium which seats 30,295.
The Chippewas are among the top 25 teams in terms of all-time winning percentages. On his second year as Head Coach, Butch Jones, has proven a good match for the Chippewas. Jones is the first coach in school history to lead CMU to back-to-back bowl games, and he is just the fifth coach in Mid-American Conference history to guide his team to a bowl game in both of his first two seasons. The Chippewas lost both of this bowls.
Central Michigan had a good 2008 season. With an overall 8-5 record, they took 6 wins and 2 defeats in conference games. They ended up 2nd in the Western Division of the Mid-American Conference, losing the last 3 games of the season.
At the end of the 2009 season the Chippewas held a 9-0 conference record, and an 11-2 mark overall to take the first place of the East Division of the MAC. Late in the season, it was announced that Butch Jones would move on to coach the Cincinnati Bearcats Football Team. In January 6th 2010, Central Michigan will face Troy for the GMAC Bowl.
