The Mid American Conference was created in 1946 and it is also known as MAC. It has gradually grown becoming one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country.
The conference takes part in the top level of NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly Division I-A) and it is known for producing many talented quarterbacks that have accomplished numerous honours in the National Football League.
Presently, MAC is among the top schools in the NCAA division, producing a total of four bowl teams. The school participates in the following sports: men's and women's cross-country, field hockey, football, men's and women's golf, women's gymnastics, men's and women's soccer, baseball, men's and women's basketball, softball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track, women's volleyball and wrestling.
Former Mid American Conference members were: Butler Bulldogs, Cincinnati Bearcats, Marshall Thundering Herd, UCF Knights and Wayne State Tartars. Wayne State was not very much involved and rapidly stepped out while Butler left within one year.
Today’s the division breakdown is as follows:
MAC East: Akron Zips, Bowling Green Falcons, Buffalo Bulls, Kent State Golden Flashes, Miami Red Hawks, Ohio Bobcats, Temple Owls.
MAC West: Ball State Cardinals, Central Michigan Chippewas, Eastern Michigan Eagles, Northern Illinois Huskies, Toledo Rockets, and Western Michigan Broncos.
