The Mid American Conference is part of the NCAA Division I and it was originally founded in 1946. The conference’s headquarters are located in Cleveland, Ohio and its 12 full members are mainly from the Great Lakes’ area.
The conference is divided into two divisions:
The MAC East Division formed by:
- Ohio University
- Miami University
- Kent State University
- University at Buffalo
- Bowling Green State University
- University of Akron
- Temple University (Affiliate, football only)
And the MAC Western Division formed by:
- Ball State University
- Central Michigan University
- Eastern Michigan University
- Northern Illinois University
- University of Toledo
- Western Michigan University.
The two schools that have obtained the most number of championships in the MAC conference are Marshall with a total of 5 titles and Toledo with 2.
Some of the most accomplished football players that have become part of the MAC Hall of Fame are:
- Tom Beutler, Toledo (1994)
- Ken Kramer, Ball State (1991)
- Doyt Perry, Bowling Green (1988)
- Trevor Rees, Kent State (1989)
- Shafer Suggs, Ball State (1989)
Presently, the MAC is among the top schools in the NCAA division with a total of four bowl teams.
