- The conference original name was Gateway Football Conference but in June, 2008 they changed it to Missouri Valley Football Conference.
- The conference has changed its name twice since its beginning; it was first called Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference until 1991.
- Missouri Valley Football has a total of 9 active school members
- Patty Viverito has been the conference commissioner since 1982.
- Eastern Illinois is the only charter member that have left the conference; currently it is member of the Ohio Valley Conference.
- Western Kentucky left the conference after the 2006 season as the school's football program was upgraded to the Foolball Bowl Subdivision.
- The winningest teams in the conference have been the Northern Iowa Panthers, with 13 conference titles, followed by the Western Illinois Leathernecks, with 5.
