The Mountain West Conference is the newest conference in the NCAA Division-I A, it was established on May 26, 1998 but their operations officially started on June 01, 1999 with headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The conference has members from the states of California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.
The charter members since the foundation of the conference in 1998 are universities from Colorado State, Air Force, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Wyoming, BYU and Utah. Lately, TCU joined the group in 2005.
There have been athletic rivalries even before the establishment of the conference and the most recognized of them have been:
- The Holy War between Utah and BYU for the Beehive Boot Trophy
(since 1896) - Border War between Colorado and Wyoming for the Bronze Boot Trophy (since 1899)
- New Mexico and Utah for the Bowl game (since 1938)
- Air Force and Colorado State for the Ram-Falcon Trophy (since 1980)
Some teams of the MWC have participated in the post-season inaugural bowls, namely the "2000 Silicon Valley", "2001 New Orleans", "2002 San Francisco's Emerald Bowl", "2005 Poinsettia", "2005 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl", "2006 New Mexico".
Mountain West Conference fields 17 different sports (8 for men and 9 for women) among which are: football, baseball, women's soccer, swimming and diving, men's and women's basketball, golf, skiing, men's and women's tennis, volleyball, cross country, softball, indoor and outdoor track.
