Based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the New Mexico Lobos are members of the Mountain West Conference in the NCAA Division I. Before joining the MWC in 1999, the Lobos played in the Western Athletic Conference. The Lobos have played their home games at the University Stadium since 1960.
The Lobos have a cumulative record of 449–513–31 and have won a total of 4 Conference Championships in two different conferences; one in 1938 in the Border Conference and three in the WAC during the seasons of 1962, 1963 and 1964. Currently, the NMU football head coach is Mike Locksley. Locksely replaced Rocky Long , who guided the Lobos to five bowl games in seven seasons.
With a 4-8 overall record in the 2008 season, the New Mexico football team ended in seventh place of the MWC with a conference play of 2-6. In 2009, the Lobos ended second to last in the Mountain West Conference. They held a 1-11 overall record, with a 1-7 mark in conference games.
