The Northeast Conference was established in 1996 and was formed by five universities at the time: Monmouth, Saint Francis, Central Connecticut State, Robert Morris and Wagner.

Two years after, the conference expanded and Sacred Heart joined. Then, in 1999, Albany and Stony Brook were accepted as members, as well as St John’s in the year 2000.

The Colonials won the conference championship in 1996 and 1997. The Robert Morris’ coach received the Northeast Conference of the year award in recognition for the success of his team.

In 1998, the history changed due Monmouth won the championship, but in 1999 and 2000, Robert Morris made history in the conference again by winning the championship those years.

In 2001, Sacred Heart won the Conference title with an impeccable record of 11-0. In 2002, Albany made its part by winning the title which would be taken the next year by Monmouth, who would keep it until 2004.

In 2005, the title would go to Central Connecticut State and then, return back to Monmouth in 2006. In 2007, the title would go to Albany again.

In 2008, Duquesne was accepted in the conference as a new affiliate team for football only.
