Overall, the most successful years for the Bears were 1996 and 1997, when they attained the NCAA Division II national championship as part of the North Central Conference. In 2003, the Bears started their transition from Division II to Division I.

After a four-year process of moving from the NCAA's Division II to Division I-AA, the Bears have continued working hard to improve each season.  During the 2008 season, however, Northern Colorado ended in 8th place of the BSC with an overall record of 1-10, losing the last 6 games of the season.
