Based in Richmond, Kentucky, the Eastern Kentucky Colonels are members of the Ohio Valley Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA. The Colonels have been part of the OVC since 1948 and play their home games at the Roy Kidd Stadium.

In their history at the OVC, the Colonels have won twenty OVC conference titles and two Division I FCS National Championships, in 1979 and 1982. With its victory over Southeast Missouri State University in 2008, Eastern's football team protected its 31st consecutive winning season.

With an 8-4 overall record for the 2008 season, Eastern Kentucky ended in 1st place of the OVC, finishing in the conference play with an even 7-1 record and losing the last game of the season against Richmond 10-38.
