Based in Murray, Kentucky, the Murray State Racers are members of the Ohio Valley Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA. The Racers joined the OVC in 1948 and play their home games at the Roy Stewart Stadium, which was opened in 1973.

In their 61 years of football history, the Racers have won seven OVC championships, the last one won in 2002.

For the 2008 season, the Racers ended with an overall record of 5-7 in the season and finished in 5th place of the OVC.  In conference play the Panthers ended with a 4-4 record, winning the last game of the season against Tennessee 17-24.
