Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Butler Bulldogs are members of the Pioneer League Football Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA. The Bulldogs joined the PLF in 1991 after competing in several conferences in Division I (MVC, MAC and ICC) and Division II (HCC).

The Bulldogs play their home games at the Butler Bowl. During their history, the BU football team had won a total of 20 conference championships outside the Pioneer League; however in the PLF the Bulldogs have won only one title in 1994. 

With a 6-5 overall record for the 2008 season, the Bulldogs football team finished in 4th place in the PFL, ending the conference play with a 4-4 even record and losing the last four games of the season.
