Based in Des Moines, Iowa, the Drake Bulldogs are members of the Pioneer League Football Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA since 1993. Before joining the PLF, the Bulldogs competed in the Division III as Independent.

Since joining the PLF, the Bulldogs have won four conference titles in 1995, 1998, 2000 and 2004. They play their home games at Drake Stadium since 1925.

For the 2008 season, the Bulldogs ended with an overall record of 6-5 in the season and finished in fifth place in the PFL.  In conference play, the Panthers ended with a 4-4 record, winning the last game of the season against Valparaiso 32-0.
