The Pioneer Football League was established in 1991 and it has members belonging to the eastern, central and western part of the United States.
Currently there are nine active members in the PFL and it will expand to ten in 2009. These schools are:
- Butler University,
- Campbell University
- Davidson College
- University of Dayton
- Drake University
- Jacksonville University
- Marist College (joining in 2009)
- Morehead State University
- University of San Diego
- Valparaiso University
In the beginning the conference played with the North-South divisional format, until the year 2006 in which it adopted the full-round robin scheduling format.
The schools of Dayton, Drake and Valparaiso have won the most football championship titles since the beginning of the conference.
Starting in 2006, the champion of the Pioneer Football League along with the champion of the Northeast Conference play a postseason game named the Gridiron Classic. The first two games have been won by the Pioneer League champion, San Diego in 2006 and Dayton in 2007.
Some of the oldest founded schools in the league are: Davidson College (1837), University of Dayton (1850) Butler University (1855) and Valparaiso University (1859).
Some of the leading football facilities are: the Butler Bowl Stadium, the Welcome Stadium at Dayton, the Drake Stadium at Drake and the Morehead stadium at Morehead state.
