The University of Mississippi competes in the twelve-member Southeastern Conference (West Division) of the NCAA's Division I.

Since the 1960s, Mississippi has gone through some lean years, but has enjoyed more success recently.

ncluding a SEC Western Division Co-Championship and Cotton Bowl victory in 2003, as the Mississippi Rebels were led to 10 victories by Eli Manning, the son of Mississippi great Archie Manning.

Mississippi's athletic rivals are Louisiana State University (Tigers) and primarily Mississippi State University (Bulldogs).
