Important Facts
- For the 2008 campaign the conference started its 88th season of competition.
- The SoCon is one of the leading football conferences and, over a period of 21 seasons, it has placed several representatives in the FCS playoffs.
- The Southern along with the Big Ten, the Missouri Valley, the Pacific 10 and the SWAC are the oldest conferences in the NCAA Division I.
- Throughout the conference years there has been a total of 27 players who have become part of the College Football Hall of Fame.
- Appalachian State and Chattanooga won the 2007-2008 Commissioner's Cup and Germann's Cup respectively
- SoCon in professional football:
Former Citadel Head Coach (1973-77), Bobby Ross, led the San Diego Chargers during the Super Bowl XXIX (1996).
