Based in Carbondale, Illinois, the Southern Illinois Salukis have been members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA since 1985. The Salukis play their home games at the McAndrew Stadium, which has a capacity of 17,000.
The Salukis won a national championship in NCAA Division I-AA in 1983 and have won a total of three conference titles in the MVFC. Even before joining the MVFC, the Salukis won 4 titles. In fact, since 2003, the team has won 40 games and was ranked 12th in Division I football during that time.
In 2008, the Salukis finished with an overall record of 9-3 and obtained first place of the MVFC with a conference record of 7-1, although the team lost the last game of the season against New Hampshire 20-29.
