Based in Huntsville, Texas, the Sam Houston State University Bearkats are members of the Southland Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA. The Bearkats, before becoming part of the SLC, competed in the Gulf Star Conference as well in others conferences such as the Lone Star Conference, the TIAA and finally the NIAI.

The Bearkats play their home games at the Bowers Stadium, which was opened in 1986. In the school’s Division I history, the Bearkats football team have attained 3 Southland Conference championships during the years of 1991, 2001 and 2004(shared with Northwestern State). The team has also appeared in 4 playoffs during the seasons of 1986, 1991, 2001 and 2004.

Last season 2008, the Sam Houston Bearkats finished with an overall record of 4-6 and obtained seventh place in the SLC with a conference record of 2-5.  However, the Bearkats football team lost the last two games of the season against Southeastern Louisiana and Texas State.
