The Nicholls State University Colonels are based in Thibodaux, Louisiana, and are members of the Southland Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA since 1991. The Colonels play their home games at the John L. Guidry Stadium, which has a capacity of 12,800 seats.
Historically with the SLC, the Colonels have won only one SLC championship in 2005 after beating the McNeese State Cowboys 39-26. After that, the team tied for first in the regular season standings with Texas State. The Colonels then advanced to the NCAA Division-I playoffs after beating Texas State.
With a 3-6 overall record for the 2008 season, the Nicholls State football team ended up in fifth place of the SLC with a conference play of 3-4, winning the last game of the season against Southeastern Louisiana 35-28.
