Based in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the McNeese State University Cowboys are members of the Southland Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA. The Cowboys joined the SLC in 1972 and play their home games at the Cowboy Stadium.
During their time at the Southland Conference, the Cowboys have won 12 SLC titles with the last one in 2007. During their football history, the Cowboys have had 14 coaches. However, the current coach, Matt Viator has lasted three years as head coach and has taken the team to two consecutive SLC championships in 2006 and 2007. Last season 2008, the McNeese State football team finished with an overall record of 7-4 and finished in third place of the SLC with a conference record of 4-3. However, the Cowboys lost the last game of the season against Central Arkansas 30-47.
