Based in Natchitoches, Louisiana, the NSU Demons are members of the Southland Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA. The Demons joined the SLC in 1987 after competing in the Gulf Star (1984-1986), the Gulf South (1972-1974) and the Gulf States (1948-1970) conferences during several years.
Since World War II, the Demons have won or shared 10 conference titles. In the Gulf States Conference they won the title in 1953, 1962, 1966 and shared it in 1957-58. During the Gulf South Conference, the Demons attained the title in 1984. Presently in the Southland Conference, Northwestern State has won the conference championship in 1988, then shared it with McNeese State in 1997 and won consecutively in 1998. Their last title was obtained in 2004 and was shared with Sam Houston.
For the 2008 season, the Northwestern State football team ended with an overall record of 7-5 and finished in fourth place of the SLC. In conference play, they ended with a 4-3 record, winning the last game of the season against Stephen F. Austin 34-24
