Based in Hammond, Louisiana, the Southeastern Louisiana University Lions are members of the Southland Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA. The Lions joined the SLC in 2005 after not having any team from 1986 to 2002. Prior to the lack of a team, the Lions used to compete at the Gulf State Conference.
The SELU football team has played their home games at the Strawberry Stadium since 1936, but has been restructured on several occasions.
During the football history of the Lions, the team has won only six conference championships. In 1946, the Lions won their first conference title at the Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference and during their years at the Gulf States Conference, the Southeastern football team attained the title in 1952-54, 1956 and finally 1960. It has to be mentioned than from 1986 to 2002, the school didn’t have a football team.
With a 5-7 overall record for the 2008 season, the Southeastern Louisiana Lions ended in sixth place of the SLC with a conference play of 2-5, losing the last game of the season against Nicholls 28-35.
