Based in Nacogdoches, Texas; the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are members of the Southland Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA since 1987. At Nacogdoches, the Lumberjacks have played their home games at the Homer Bryce Stadium since 1973.

During their incursion in the SLC, the Lumberjacks have won two titles in 1989 and 1999. They have also achieved four post-season appearances in 1988, 1989, 1993 and 1995. Moreover in the season of 1989, the Lumberjacks were the national finalists in the Division I-AA.

For the 2008 season, the Stephen F. Austin football team ended with an overall record of 4-8 and finished in last place of the SLC. In conference play, they ended with a 2-5 record, losing the last five games of the season.
