The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) was created in 1914; originally integrated by the following members: Texas A&M University, Baylor University, University of Arkansas, Oklahoma State University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Oklahoma, Rice University, and Southwestern University.
The SWAC witnessed its first triumphs during the 1960s as Texas won the 1963 and 1969 Nationals and Arkansas achieved the 1964 championship despite the narrow focus of national exposure as most of its member universities were located within the state of Texas.
Among some the most recognized players of the SWA Conference we can mention: Sammy Baugh, Doak Walker, Dickey Moegle, John David Crow, Bob Lilly, Tommy Nobis, James Street, Donnie Trull, Steve McMichael, Dan Hampton, Mike Singletary, Andre Ware, Zach Thomas, James Francis, Priest Holmes and as outstanding head coaches Dana Bible, Paul "Bear" Bryant, Hayden Fry, Lou Holtz, Spike Dykes, and Grant Teaff.
In 1993 the SWA Conference was knocked as four of the major universities were called in to join the Big Eight Conference (Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Baylor) fact that gave origin to the Big 12 Conference.
