The Southwestern Athletic Conference or SWAC began its operations in 1920 and it is currently part of the NCAA Division I in all sports. Most members are from the southwest area in the United States and the conference headquarter is located in Birmingham, Alabama.
All the current school members are public and are mainly attended by the black community. The conference sponsors a total of 18 sports along which 10 are for women and the remaining 8 are for males.
The SWAC is recognized for the amount of alumni that have played professional football, situation that classifies it as an elite conference.
The conference is divided into two divisions:
Eastern division:
- Alabama A&M University
- Alabama State University
- Alcorn State University
- Mississippi Valley St. University
- Jackson State University
Western Division:
- University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff
- Grambling State University
- Prairie View A&M University
- Southern University
- Texas Southern University
This conference doesn’t participate in the FCS postseason football tournament; however, they play instead a conference championship game between the leaders of the two divisions, which is scheduled after the beginning of the NCAA tournament.
