Based in Montgomery, Alabama, the Alabama State Hornets are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA since 1982. The Hornets play their home games at the Sun Devils Stadium.
In their history at SWAC, the Hornets have won two conference championships in 1991 and 2004. Moreover, in 2001 and 2003, Alabama State football team reached the conference finals but lost against Grambling and Southern respectively.
With a 3-8 overall record for the 2008 season, the Hornets ended in third place of the East Division of the SWAC with a conference play of 2-5, winning the last game of the season against Tuskegee 17-13.
