Southern University and A&M College was founded in 1880 as a public coeducational school for the black community.
In its early stages due to the constant increase in population and lack of space the school relocated to Scotlandville in 1914.
Southern is part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in the NCAA Division I system. The rivalry between Southern and its Northern neighbor Grambling State is very known and many await the “Football game” in the annual Bayou Classic in New Orleans at the Louisiana Superdome. |
Some of the school’s most prominent sports figures are: St. Louis Cardinal, Lou Brock, record-setting base-stealing outfielder, Charlotte Hornets basketball player Bobby Phills, Los Angeles Rams Six time Pro-Bowler in the NFL, Isiah Robertson and lastly; Aeneas Williams, NFL All-Star who played for the Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams.
