Based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Southern University Jaguars are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA since 1934. The Jaguars plays their home games at the AW Mumford Stadium and have been the SWAC member with more titles than any other team at 19.

In all their years at the SWAC, the Jaguars have had great success, winning a total of 19 SWAC titles. Their first title was achieved in 1937 and the last one was in 2003, in hands of Coach Pete Richardson, who is still presently the head coach of the Jaguars.

Last season 2008, the Southern University football team had an incredible season, finishing with an overall record of 6-5 and obtaining the third place of the West Division in the SWAC with a conference record of 5-2.
