Important Facts
- The WAC conference covers an broad area in the Western part of the United States.
- The Western Athletic Conference began with the sixth oldest of the 11 College Athletic Conferences currently affiliated with the NCAA’s Division I-A.
- In 2005 four members left the conference; these were: Rice, SMU, Tulsa and UTEP.
- The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men’s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title.
- The WAC awards its Commissioner's Cup to the school with the best performance among the 19th men's and women's championships
- The Western Athletic Conference staged a conference title football game during the first three years with only sixteen members
- In 2001, the WAC partnered with ESPN and added a regional network for unprecedented coverage of football.
