Western Athletic Conference History
The Western Athletic Conference or WAC was originally integrated in 1962 and among the potential member universities were: Brigham Young, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Arizona State and Wyoming. Other schools as New Mexico State and Utah State became members of the conference 43 years later.
The conference fields 19 different sports (team and individual) and these are in the men’s category: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor/outdoor track and field. In the women’s category, we can find baseball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming/diving, tennis, indoor/outdoor track and field and volleyball.
Within the conference there is a long list of rivalries among the school’s members, just to mention some: Boise State and Fresno ST., Boise State and Idaho, Hawaii and Boise State, Hawaii and Fresno State, San Jose State and Fresno State and Louisiana Tech and Fresno ST.
There are three main football Bowl games for which the conference sends teams, these are: the Hawaii Bowl (a WAC team versus a C-USA team), the Humanitarian Bowl (a WAC team versus a ACC opponent) and New Mexico Bowl ( a WAC team versus a MWC team).
