Based in Macomb, Illinois, the Western Illinois Leathernecks are members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA. The Leathernecks joined the MVFC in 1985 after competing in the Gateway Football Conference; the team plays its home games at the Hanson Field.

In its 106 years of football, the team has won 12 conference championships. Terry Allen, the team’s head coach for the past 11 years, has taken the Leather Necks to several playoff berths, two Gateway Football Conference titles, and a no. 1 national ranking.

With a 6-5 overall record for the 2008 season, the Leathernecks ended in 4th place of the MVFC, finishing in the conference play with an even 4-4 record and losing the last game of the season against Youngstown State 31-28.
