The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers represent the Western Kentucky University and play football since 1913. Their one of the four independent teams in the Division I-A of the NCAA.
The Hilltoppers used to be in the Division I-AA, where they won the National football championship in 2002, when they were part of the Gateway Conference.
Due to a proposal of the school's president, Gary A. Ransdell, the football team was moved to the Division I-A in the 2007 season.
