This brief guide will help you understand and wager on NFL football. A bet on the Money Lines is a wager placed on a team to win a game regardless of the point spread, that is, to win straight up. The favorite team will have a negative ML while the underdog will have a positive ML.
Let's take the following ML as an example, Indianapolis Colts -140 / New Orleans Saints + 120. What this means is that if you take the Colts, you will have to risk $140 for every $100 you want to win. On the other hand, if you decide to go for the underdog, and choose the Saints +120, you will be winning $120 for every $100 you risk. All ML's are based upon $100 dollars bets for payout and risk amount calculations. For more information, please refer to our NFL Football Betting Rules.
More about NFL football point spreads
There are two types of points spreads with plus and minus signs. Points in the spread are taken away from the favorite team’s final score; and added to the underdog's final score, depending on the team you placed your wager on. Favorite teams will show a negative sign next to the points spread while the underdog will show a positive sign. When the team against the spread has a tie the bet has no action.
For example:
The Oakland Raiders are playing against the Detroit Lions. The Raiders are expected to win and the spread is Raiders -5 -110 and the Lions +5 -110. Let's say you bet $100 on the Raiders, that is, risking $110 to make $100. If they win by 6 points or higher the bet is a winner. If they win by 5 points the bet takes no action, and moneys are refunded to your account. If the Raiders lose or win by less than 5 points the bet is a looser and you will be deducted $110 from your account's balance..
While betting on NFL football points spread the bettor generally risks $110 to win $100. There are other facts to be considered when choosing a point spread such as: injuries, weather, home team advantage, quarterback's stats, team's season-long performance, etc. The spread may be changed if the bets coming into the sports books are unbalanced favoring any of the teams. The bettor is attached to what the point spread was when the wager was placed.
