Buffalo Bills

Charter members of the American Football League, the Buffalo Bills are now members of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference in the National Football League. First established in 1960, the Bills entered the NFL after the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Although the team has claimed two AFL titles, it has yet to claim the ultimate NFL title, the Super Bowl. The team is located in Buffalo, New York.

The Bills are also famously the team that drafted running back O.J. Simpson, who would represent the franchise throughout much of the 1970s. In 1977, Simpson was traded to the San Francisco 49ers.

After the merger, the team would not see its first Division championship until the 1980s. Nor would the team claim any conference championships until the 1990s. It was then that the Bills claimed four consecutive conference championships, between 1990 and 1993, after the team began focusing on a speedy offense. Despite the team’s regular season and often post season success, it failed to capture the Super Bowl.

The Bills struggled during much of the early 2000s. By 2004, however, things began to look up for the team. First round pick Willis McGahee, a running back with a knee injury, along with Lee Evans, brought a resurgence for the Buffalo team in the last games of the year. Although the team lost a playoff berth to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the final run seemed to promise a better 2005 season.

The Bills signed J.P. Losman as quarterback, but Losman was unable to start successfully for the team. Kelly Holcomb replaced Losman throughout much of the season, but still the Bills ended with a 5-11 regular season record that led to the firing of General Manager Tom Donahoe and the resignation of head coach Mike Mularkey. Marv Levy was named GM while Dick Jauron was hired as head coach.

Jauron, however, was unable to bring about much improvement. Both the 2006 and 2007 regular seasons ended with 7-9 records. The team brought in defensive replacements in 2006, including Donte Whitner, Ko Simpson, Ashton Youboty, Anthony Hargrove, and Kyle Williams. In 2007, the team bolstered its offense, adding Trent Edwards as quarterback among others. Edwards replaced Losman that season.

BY the end of the 2007 season, Levy retired as GM and was replaced by Russ Brandon. Despite the addition of linebacker Kawika Mitchell, defensive tackle Marcus Stroud, cornerback Leodis McKelvin, and wide receiver James Hardy, 2008 saw a repeat of the same 7-9 season.

The Bills finished the 2009 season with a 6-10 record, suffering 3 of those defeats in the last five games of the year. Positive aspects that are worthy of being recognized are Jairus Byrd’s nine interceptions, setting a record in the franchise for a rookie; Terrell Owens’ 1,006 career receptions that position him as the sixth player in NFL history in that category; Lee Evans’ career 5,356 receiving yards and 39 touchdowns that put him third in the Bills’ history. And last but not least, running back Fred Jackson’s 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 kick return yards that make him the only player in NFL history to do so in the same season.
