Indianapolis Colts

Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Indianapolis Colts are members of the National Football League (NFL)’s South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC). The franchise’s history extends back to 1913, although the Colts franchise was officially established in 1953 in Baltimore. The team would eventually move to Indianapolis in 1984, but prior to the move, the Colts would make 10 playoffs appearances and win 5 division championships, 3 NFL league championships, and 1 Super Bowl.

The first decade after the move was a difficult one for the Colts, who landed only one playoffs appearance in the team’s first ten years in Indianapolis. By the end of the 1990s, however, the team would begin to pick up momentum. In 1998, the team hired Jim Mora as head coach; Mora decided to rebuild the floundering team using the NFL draft system. The team used its first pick to draft quarterback Peyton Manning, and in 1999, the team finished at 13-3 and won the AFC East.

In 2002, Mora was fired and replaced by Tony Dungy of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The next season, the Colts finished with a 12-4 season, with Manning named co-MVP of the year. The Colts would go on to claim the AFC South for the next five years, and make the playoffs for the next six.

In 2006, the Colts finished with another 12-4 record and third seed in the playoffs. The team defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, the Baltimore Ravens, and their archrivals, the New England Patriots, to enter into the Super Bowl championship game against the Chicago Bears. The Colts defeated the Bears 29-17, and Manning was named Super Bowl MVP after finishing 25 of 38 passes for 247 yards.

In 2007, the Colts finished with a 13-3 season and became the first NFL team to go five consecutive seasons with 12 or more wins. The team lost, however, to the San Diego Chargers in the divisional playoffs.

2008 became the first season that the Colts did not win the AFC South title since 2003; however, the team again finished with a strong regular season record at 12-4. Manning again claimed NFL MVP, but the Colts lost again to San Diego in the Wild Card playoffs.

Before 2009, no team in NFL history had obtained 7 consecutive 12-win seasons, record the Indianapolis Colts set that year. The Colts began the season with such intensity that by Week 11 they had already clinched Division –which also gave them Homefield Advantage in the postseason- and joined the 49ers (1997), Eagles (2004) and Patriots (2007) as the only four teams that have done so since 1990. With a 14-2 the Colts went to the playoffs and defeated the Ravens 3-20 for the Divisional Round. Then they won their Super Bowl ticket against the Jets, defeating them by 17-30 in the AFC Championship Round. Their season had a surprising ending in Miami, where they were upset by the Saints 31-17, missing the chance of becoming the Super Bowl XLIV champions.
