Detroit Lions

Based in Detroit, Michigan, the Detroit Lions are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference in the National Football League. Originally called the Spartans, the franchise was founded in Portsmouth, Ohio, in 1929. In 1930, the team joined the NFL, and in 1934, the club was sold and moved to Detroit, where it adopted its current moniker.

The Lions are one of the least successful teams in the NFL with 4 NFL championships but not a single Super Bowl title.

The team’s last championship title was granted in 1957, granting the team the dubious distinction of going the longest period – behind the Arizona Cardinals – without attaining a title. Thus far in franchise history, the Lions have won only one playoff game.

In 2008, the Lions became the only team in the history of the NFL to lose all 16 regular season games.

The Detroit Lions were swept 0-5 in the last games of the 2009 season, and finished 2-14 in the year. Despite the team’s performance wide receiver Calvin Johnson set a new franchise record with his career 3,081 receiving yards and 193 receptions in his first 3 seasons with the Lions. That is the most for any Lion during the first 3 seasons. And rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford’s five touchdown passes in a single-game tied Ray Buivid’s 1937 record for a rookie.
