Houston Texans

Based in Houston, Texas, the Houston Texans are members of the National Football League (NFL) ‘s Southern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC). First established in 2002 as a replacement for the former Houston Oilers (who moved to Nashville to become the Tennessee Titans), the Texans boast the dubious honor of being the only team in the league that has yet to make a playoffs berth, and one of five teams that have yet to qualify for the Super Bowl.

The Texans began play in 2002, defeating the Dallas Cowboys to become the second-ever expansion team to win its first game. The Texans finished the season a 4-12, but managed to send two players, Aaron Glenn and Gary Walker, to the Pro-Bowl. The Houston team improved slightly the next season, with a regular season record of 5-11 that also included close games with the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots. The team continued to improve the next year, moving up to a 7-9 regular season after a defeat by the Cleveland Browns. It was the team’s first year out of the cellar.

In 2005, events took a turn for the worst. Pundits began questioning administrative choices and draft picks, while rumors abounded that the Texans were losing in order to secure a number one pick in the upcoming draft. After a 2-14 regular season, the entire administration was completely overhauled; Gary Kubiak was hired as head coach and Rick Smith as general manager.

In 2006, the Texans improved slightly, just missing their first .500 season after defensive failures against the Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans. In 2007, Houston announced Matt Schaub, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons, as quarterback. The team began with a promising 2-0 season but a series of injuries to key players, including Schaub and Andre Johnson, a former Pro-Bowl receiver, ending hopes of a playoffs berth. However, the team had its first breakeven regular season in franchise history.

In the 2008 preseason, the Texans acquired running back Steve Slaton, who would lead all rookies with 1,282 yards rushing and 1,549 yards from scrimmage in the regular season. Andre Johnson also gave a stellar performance, with 115 receptions and 1,575 receiving yards. The Texans finished with another 8-8 season but sent three players to the Pro-Bowl.

With a 9-7 record the Houston Texans were able to close their first winning season in history, where they won 4 of their last 5 games. With 4,770 yards, 29 touchdowns and 98.6 passer rating quarterback Matt Schaub set the a franchise record, and his nine 300-passing yards games in one season made him the third best in NFL history, at just one game away from Rich Gannon and Drew Brees. Schaub had a great connection with wide receiver Andre Johnson, and together they led the NFL in passing yards -4,770 for the QB- and receiving yards -1,569 for the WR-. The last time that two teammates had done it was back in 1998, when Packers Brett Favre and Antonio Freeman did it too. And Linebacker Brian Cushing was named AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, in a season where he had 4 interceptions, tying the record for a Texan linebacker.
