Based in Jacksonville, Florida, the Jacksonville Jaguars are members of the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). First established as an expansion franchise in 1995, the Jaguars have captured two division championships and made six playoffs appearances.
The Jaguars finished their first season at 4-12, using many of the teammates who would later bring the Jaguars to success: quarterback Mark Brunell, lineman Tony Boselli, running back James Stewart, and wide receiver Jimmy Smith.
The Jaguars had their first winning season the next year, at 9-6, and entered the playoffs, where they defeated the Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos before finally succumbing to the New England Patriots. That year was the first of the Jaguars’ four consecutive playoffs years. The team would also win the AFC Central title twice, in 1998 and 1999.
At the turn of the century, the Jaguars began hitting obstacles; namely, a salary cap issue that kept the team out of the competition. In 2003, after the Jaguars moved from the AFC’s central division to the south, Jack Del Rio was hired as head coach and Byron Leftwich was selected as quarterback. Even after the removal of salary caps, however, the team continued to falter.
By 2004, the slowly rebuilding team began to see results; then, by 2005, a phenomenal 13-0 start to the season clinched the AFC South for the Jaguars. The team earned a wild card playoffs berth and entered the playoffs for the first time since 1999. The Jaguars couldn’t continue the performance, though; a series of injuries and key retirements left the team out of the playoffs again in 2006.
In 2007, the Jaguars replaced Leftwich with long-time backup David Garrard. The team also selected safety Reggie Nelson during the draft and released Donovin Darius. With a first-rate offense, the Jaguars were able to finish with an 11-5 season and their first playoffs win – against the Pittsburgh Steelers – in nearly eight years. The Jaguars were eventually beaten by the Patriots.
In the 2008 preseason, the Jacksonville team signed wide receiver Jerry Porter and rookie defensive ends Quentin Groves and Derrick Harvey. Despite high expectations, the team’s prospects fell into the cellar. The Jaguars finished with a shocking 5-11 record due, in large part, to a series of injuries to the team’s key offensive lines.
The Jaguars’ top picks in the 2009 NFL Draft included a rash of offensive and defensive tackles, along with several wide receivers.
