Based in San Diego, California, the San Diego Chargers are members of the National Football League’s Western Division of the American Football Conference. A charter member of the NFL’s rival, the American Football League, the Chargers were established in 1960 in Los Angeles before moving to San Diego in 1961. The team joined the NFL in the AFL-NFL merger of 1970.
The Chargers were enormously successful in the first decade of their existence; the team claimed five division championships and one AFL championship before the 1970 merger. The post-merger years, however, were much less successful; with the retirement of the team’s head coach and the retirement or release of many players from the 1960s, the Chargers fell into a slump.
The Chargers managed a couple of winning runs until the end of the century: 1979-1982, 1992-1995. In fact, in 1994, the Chargers made their first Super Bowl appearance, but did not take home the title, losing against the San Francisco 49ers.
At the turn of the century the Chargers hit another slump, and by 2003, the Chargers were tied with three other teams for the worst record in the league. After the 2004 NFL Draft, the Chargers acquired quarterback Philip Rivers, who, but for a contract dispute, would have begun as starting quarterback. Instead, Drew Brees maintained the position. The team was able to return to the postseason for the first time since 1995, but lost in the first round of the playoffs to the New York Jets.
In the 2005 NFL Draft, the Chargers selected Shawne Merriman, a linebacker who would later participate in the 2006 Pro Bowl and receive the NFL Rookie of the Year Award for defensive players. By 2006, the Chargers had a 14-2 regular season, but fall short for the postseason after losing to the New England Patriots. The off season marked a series of dramatic changes to the Chargers’ administration, with the loss of both the offensive and defensive coordinators and the hiring of Norv Turner as head coach.
The next season, in 2007, the Chargers had an 11-5 regular season, winning the AFC West and making a playoff appearance. In 2008, the Chargers dropped to an 8-8 regular season, again clinching the AFC West against the Denver Broncos. The San Diego team defeated the Indianapolis Colts, advancing to the AFC Divisional Playoff round, where they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Chargers have yet to win the NFL’s title, the Super Bowl.
