Plaxico Burress

Possibly the most successful one-year image renewal project in NFL history.

Roughness down the stretch last season merit him solid respect.

Went from quitter to role model. Once reluctant to play hard, Burress gallantly played hurt. Quite well, in fact.

The 6-foot-5 wideout played in every game despite being stumble by an ankle injury all year long and build up team bests of 70 receptions and 12 regular-season touchdowns, not to mention a dominating 11-catch, 151-yard effort in the team's NFC Championship win at Green Bay.

Burress has been dealing with another ankle problem in the preseason that some speculate may be related to a contract dispute with management, but has insisted he'll be ready to go come September.

The most amusing quibble came in June. When Plaxico Burress sat out a minicamp, reporters assumed he was resting the ankle that kept him out of practice all last season.

Then Burress casually mentioned that he was healthy, but unhappy with his contract. Very rarely does a player show up, mix with teammates and then announce in front of everyone that he’s protesting his contractual situation.

Showing up to persist? That’s not unlike sending someone a formal invitation to crash your party. Burress’s behavior was so bizarre that the spite behind it was filled by its silliness.

The relationship between the receiver and franchise appears to be fine, but still, you can’t help but roll your eyes and file it away.
