NFL Football Season 2008- 09

Vincent Young

Captivating talent who has a skill for winning games. Can these qualities continue to outdo his weak spots as a passer?

Is Vince Young a good quarterback? The question seems juvenile considering the former first-round pick has a record of 17-11 as a starter.

Those who love to wax theoretic can easily point out Young’s patchy accuracy, inconsistent decision making and over-reliance on raw athleticism.

His quarterback rating of 71.1 last season is nothing to celebrate.

He threw more than twice as many interceptions as touchdowns and routinely struggled when forced into obvious passing situations.

Keep in mind, however, that when Young first entered the league, few figured he’d see much, if any, action his first two seasons.

Thus far, the 25-year-old has been playing with house money and mainly winning. Rough around the edges, yes, Young certainly is.

He still has fleeting bouts of immaturity, but clearly, signs of greatness leak out of him.

Career accomplishments

  • Vince Young is the only player throughout NCAA I-A history who in the same season pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards
  • Young became the first freshman quarterback in UT history to have three 100-yard rushing games
  • In 2003-2004 Young's 17 wins and 43 touchdowns accounted the most ever by a UT quarterback in their first two years
  • At 61.8% Young's career passing completion percentage is the best in UT history
  • Young passed for 44 touchdowns is at number 4 in UT history while rushing for 3,127 yards (No. 1 on UT's all-time quarterback rushing list/No. 5 on UT's all-time list) and 37 touchdowns (No. 4 on UT's all-time rushing touchdowns list/T-No. 1 among quarterbacks)
  • In 2004 Young set the UT single-game pass completion percentage record against Oklahoma State by completing 18 of 21 passes (85.7%).
  • In 2005 against Colorado Young broke over exceeded his own record by completing 25 of 29 passes (86.2%)
  • In the 2006 NCAA national championship game, Young completed 30 of 40 passes for 267 yards and carried the ball 19 times for 200 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns
