Newell's Old Boys

The club Newell's Old Boys has an historic rivalry with Rosario Central, the other club from Rosario.

Back in 1941, the Newell’s Old Boys club among with Boca Juniors, San Lorenzo and Racing were some of the Argentinean clubs to make a long and successful tour in Europe in which these clubs defeated several important teams such as Valencia, Borussia, Real Madrid and the Spanish National "A" Team.

Newell's Old Boys have won the Argentine Championship five times (1974, 1987/88, 1990/91, Clausura 1992 and Apertura 2004) and were the Sub-Champions of the Copa Libertadores de América twice (1988 and 1992).

The 1990/91 Championship was disputed between the 1990 Apertura (Newell's) and 1991 Clausura (Boca Juniors) Champions, which Newell's won in home-and-away matches.

Newell's Old Boys leads all Argentine clubs in victories in the Rosario League (42), the Reserva tournaments (16), the Inferiores Young National Tournaments (78), the Latinoamerican U-17 Championships (5) and the Youth World Cups F.I.F.A. aka Nike Cup (1).

The Newell's Old Boys has exported many players to Europe's top leagues (mainly Italy and Spain). Some of these players were: Gabriel Batistuta, Balbo, Jorge Valdano, Gallego, Zanabria, Dezotti, Sensini, Samuel, Pochettino, Pontoni, Martino, Perucca and several more. Recently, it has formed players like teenage phenomenon Lionel Messi, and Manchester United's fiery full-back Gabriel Heinze.

Important Facts

The Newell's Old Boys stadium is located in the neighborhood of Parque Independencia in Rosario. It was concluded in 1911, and it is commonly referred to as El Coloso del Parque, with a capacity for 30,000 people before the modifications of 1997 (now it can hold 42,000).
