Since around 1890 football has been played in Austria. The Austrian Football Bundesliga or the Österreichische Fußball-Bundesliga is the highest national league club competition in Austrian football and it started in the 1974 / 75 season.
In this tournament the national champion is determined and the starting points for the UEFA Cup are accounted for.
Since December 1st, 1991 the Austrian Bundesliga has had 10 member teams which make up the Austrian Football Association.
The competition for this championship was created by the Lower Austrian Football Federation. Following Austria's annexation by Germany during World War 2, the Federal Republic teams were immediately integrated into the German Gauliga, however they were again excluded after the war.
In the 1974/75 season, it finally came to the introduction of the Bundesliga, which, still led by the Austrian Football Association, aligned both of the highest divisions in Austria. Finally, in 1991 both the Austrian Football Bundesliga and the Austria Football Federation were constituted again as official federations with 10 members taken up.
