Facts - Teams - Winners

K.F.C. Germinal Beerschot

In 1920 the club F.C. Germinal Ekeren was founded in the town of Ekeren. Then on July 20th, 1942 the club was registered to the Belgian Football Association.

The team reached the top division in Belgian football in 1989 and finished 13th. It achieved its best ranking in 1996 and 1998 (3rd place) and subsequently qualified for the UEFA Cup. However, in 1999, due to the low attendance of supporters and limited expansion possibilities in Ekeren, the club merged with Beerschot which was playing in 3th division and had severe financial problems.

In the summer of 2004 the new team, K.F.C. Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen encountered new financial difficulties. Marc Brys, became the new Belgian football coach, he managed to win the Belgian Cup that year and so to secure a place in UEFA Cup for his side, but after 7 matches in the Jupiler League 2005-06 season, he was fired due to bad results.
