Roberto Carlos Da Silva
Place of Birth: Garca, Sao Paulo
Date of Birth: 10 April 1973
Position: Defender
Clubs: Palmeiras (Brazil), Inter Milan (Italy), Real Madrid (Spain)
Roberto Carlos wore the Brazilian uniform in 1992 for the first time in the Olympic Qualifying tournament. Roberto Carlos’ playmaking ability in the back was an enormous asset to the Brazilian team. Since 1995 he has been first choice football player and he is widely recognized as one of the top 3 left backs in the world.
The Spaniard club Real Madrid bought him for the amount of £3 million in 1996 after just one season at Inter Milan. He helped the Spaniard club win the 1996-97 La Liga Primera title and the1997-98 UEFA Champions League.
Roberto Carlos free kicks became legendary, especially in the French Tournament in 1997; he nailed a free kick against the hosts that seemingly defied the rules of science. It was a 25-yard shot that zipped past a baffled Fabien Barthez in net.
Roberto Carlos' productivity has not slowed down; he was part of all seven games at the 1998 FIFA World Cup as Brazil reached the final. He has helped Real Madrid capture multiple Spanish and European titles and his abilities at both ends of the pitch have been key to Brazil's success in the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan.
Roberto Carlos received the Spanish citizenship but he kept the Brazilian one. This move was very important as the club opened 3 new slots for non-EU players which enable the signing of Robinho.
Pelé named Roberto Carlos as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004.
