Botafogo de Futebol (RJ)
Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas was founded on July 1, 1894 and is from Rio de Janeiro. The club was placed 12th in FIFA Clubs of the 20th Century. The Lone Star, or "Estrela D'alva", is the clubs symbol and appears on the badge. Botafogo means he who sets fire, also the name of the neighborhood where the origin of the club is from, Botafogo Beach.
On August 12, 1904 the Electro Club, first name given to the Botafogo Football Club, was founded in the same neighborhood. The actual name Botafogo Football Club was established on September 18, 1904 since both teams had the same name, colors, badge, location and supporters both teams merged on December 8, 1942.
Botafogo is one of four mayor football clubs in Rio de Janeiro. It’s most ancient rivalry in Brazil since Oct., 22, 1905 and Vasco. After winning the Rio de Janeiro League in 1989, 1990, and 1997, the international Copa Conmebol in 1993, and the Brazilian League in 1995, Botafogo was relegated to the Second Division after ranking last in 2002 in the Brazilian League. In 2003, Botafogo ranked second in Brazil's Second division, after Palmeiras, and was again part of the First Division. Despite its origins, the club plays in the neighboring city of Niterói since it rented the Mestre Ziza stadium, which has 15,000 seats and is used for training and Botafogo now plays in Maracanã.
